Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, a 45,000-acre federal preserve for wildlife and bird watching, is located about 15 minutes away on the mainland across the Laguna Madre from South Padre Island. Along the banks of the Laguna Madre, Laguna Atascosa NWR is one of the largest remaining protected wild areas in the lower Rio Grande delta. Loma and coastal brushlands are accompanied by freshwater lakes and ponds, mudflats and beaches. Here, the elusive ocelot, a small cat whose numbers are estimated to be less than 100 in the United States, quietly prowls the brushlands; Aplomado falcons soar above coastal prairies; Kemp's ridley sea turtles nest on the Gulf beaches; and the incredible diversity of bird species attracts wildlife watchers from around the world.
For more information on the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, call (956) 748-3607.

Laguna Madre Nature Trail

Next to the Convention Centre and Whaling Wall No. 53, the Laguna Madre Nature Trail is a 1,500-foot boardwalk that extends across four acres of wetlands. Containing informative signs about dune systems and bird species that frequent the area, the nature trail provides visitors with the opportunity to observe many species of birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The idea of the Laguna Madre Nature Trail was conceived by naturalist Ed Hawkins. It is dedicated to his memory. Both the Whaling Wall and nature trail are always open to the public free of charge and can be accessed through the circle driveway leading up to the Convention Centre. The South Padre Island Convention Centre is located at 7355 Padre Blvd. at the north end of town.
